Side Effects of Prescription Drugs

In addition to the high cost of prescription drugs, one thing that you must be prepared for is the side effects. The first thing to consider is that almost all prescription drugs will have some side effects; you may struggle with them, or you may not. Here are a few examples of side effects of general prescription drugs.

Pain Killers

One side effect of pain killers, including some over-the-counter ones, is stomach ulcers, occasionally bleeding ones. Consult your doctor if this should occur on how best to treat them.

Possibly one of the most crucial side effects of these drugs is the addictive nature of many prescription pain killers.

Antibiotics

There are five main classes of prescription antibiotics: Penicillins, cephalopsorins, fluroquinolones, tetracyclines, macrolides, and aminoglycosides. Two of the most common are the penicillins and the tetracyclines. Penicillins could have the side effects of fever, joint pain, light headedness, and hives, to name a few, and could rarely cause anxiety, confusion, and hallucinations. More common symptoms include diarrhea, headache, sore mouth or tongue, and white patches. Tetracyclines may increase sensitivity to sunlight and cause abdominal pain, headache, loss of appetite, or visual changes.

Anti-Depressants

General side effects from depression medication may include urinary retention, dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, sedation, sleep disruption, weight gain, headache nausea, gastrointestinal disturbance, and abdominal pain, loss of libido, agitation and anxiety.
